Mr. Elkins and the Zombies of Elbert County is not like any other zombie story I have ever read! It is really different. The Bells notice that something is messing up their vegetable garden. First thinking it is their livestock; however, on closer inspection the husband notices what appear to be human footprints in the soil. Now thinking they have a problem of human trespassers, possibly of the drunk kind, but this theory is proven to be false as they notice footprints closer to their home. They didn’t hear any noise!
Then one day, Mr. Bell sees a zombie shambling across his vegetable garden and then walking down his drive way. During breakfast the Bells begin to explain the previous night’s events to their children, but they tell them not to say anything about this to anyone at school. However, Cecilia, their youngest, while at school draws a picture of a zombie going through their property. This draws the ire of her school teacher who then calls Cecilia’s parents - this begins a series of events that complicate the Bells lives to no end!
Many questions are raised – like; who is Mr. Elkins? Why are the zombies coming back? What do they want? Again, this story is very different from other zombie stories; the narrator explains the events in a calmly, humorous manner. Not quite believing what is happening or why and definitely, not comfortable with the attention it draws to his family. The cast of characters is great and includes a morally outraged teacher (the school district is trying to strip October of its supernatural elements) to a local government official who sees the zombies as a means to make money. This story is definitely worth the read.
