A very good read.
The characters are interesting and engaging, and full of depth. I remember that I read another Spider Latham books a few years ago. I don’t remember any details now other than that I enjoyed it very much. I’ll have to re-read it and pick up the others in the series.
Spider worked in the mines for many years, but the mines closed leaving many in the area in poverty and scratching for work. To his surprise, Spider got a job as deputy sheriff in a very small and underfunded team. Out of the blue he is contacted by someone he evidently met in a previous book who has recommended him to a third party as an investigator. Feeling very under qualified Spider meets with this third party and is persuaded to look into what has become of a missing person.
Most of the action takes place in a small town in Washington state, Chewelah. it is a place the author knows very well and she paints a good picture of the area and the people with all their small town quirks.
I do recommend this series and this author.… (más)

While many "cozy" mysteries are humorous, this one is not.
The plot is convoluted in the best way. The characters are well-drawn and lively, both the main ones and the secondary ones.
And the setting is great! I have not been to that area of the country, but all the descriptions sure make it enticing in its beauty.
I expect that I will read more in this series, because I really liked the characters and the setting.

There is a good collection of red herrings to lead one astray and a thoroughly nasty, conniving villain who you can’t wait to see get his come-uppance. I reached the end with a small sigh of satisfaction and a strong desire to read the next book in the series. Oh, and it’s clean too - what a refreshing change!
