Klara has returned after being detained at Auschwitz. Her sister-in-law, Angélika, is ecstatic to have her best friends back, but Klara is not the woman she remembers. She is distant and doesn't want to see her daughter. She barely talks to anyone or take care of herself. As time passes, she comes to realise the trauma Klara has experienced and begins to understand why she has changed.

The story is told through Angélika's diary. While the style is realistic in terms of how people write diaries, I struggled to determine relationships and keep track of who is who. While the idea was a great one (and I appreciated the exploration of the aftermath of the horrors that people in concentration camps experienced), this detracted from the story and made it more difficult to stay immersed. Un livre incroyablement touchant et frappant. La plupart du temps, Klara raconte son histoire d'un ton froid, purement factuel, pragmatique, mais qui ne rend pas ce qu'elle raconte plus supportable, au contraire peut-être. Klara dit qu'elle est morte à Auschwitz. Et puis par moments la souffrance perce dans son discours, quand elle raconte par exemple les trente mots qu'elle avait inventés avec ses amies pour désigner toutes les sortes de nuages, et qu'elles se récitaient aux moments les plus difficiles pour ne pas penser à ce qui était en train de leur arriver.

J'ai lu très peu de choses sur les camps de concentration, j'ai trouvé ce livre-ci poignant.… (más)

Een op ‘minimum’ afgestelde infuuspomp waardoor slechts per bladzijde de ellende aan de lezer wordt gedoseerd, zo wil ik het boek samenvatten
.
Een door het verblijf in concentratiekamp Auschwitz, verwoest leven dat zich niet meer laat inbedden in ‘het leven nadien’. Een monument voor alle slachtoffers waarbij de conclusie kan worden getrokken dat de barbaren uiteindelijk gewonnen hebben, of - zoals Klara zegt: “voor beul heb je gekozen, slachtoffers werden aangewezen”.

Het relaas eindigt met de mededeling dat Klara “in wederopbouw is”, dat lijkt hoopgevend maar velen weten beter.… (más)
