Trouble uploading covers

I just started adding books to my library again after a few years "off". First one worked including "changing a cover". 2nd book added but the cover thing didn't work. I did it the same way as the first book. Ie: took a picture of the cover with my I phone. Waited for it to show on my computer. Loaded Library thing. Went to add books. Added the book. Went to change cover. Went to recent photos, clicked on the jpeg image. It popped up. I clicked upload. The little blue bar appeared. Then the message , can't up load this image. I tried putting the image on desktop and uploading that. I took a picture of the cover with my iPad and tried uploading that.
What am I doing wrong?

>1 vickila49: How large is it? There's a size limit of (I think) 8 Mbytes.

>1 vickila49: If you have the LibraryThing app, you can use it to scan in barcodes to add your books.

You can also use it to take photos of your book covers, which uploads it directly to LT without you having to upload it from your computer. You can crop the photo on the app before you save it to LT.

My books don't have bar codes. I guess I will try the app photography,. But I don't get why one cover worked and the other didn't. Thanks for the help.

Can you tell us exactly which books you added, which one with the proper cover and which with a bad one?
Also can you tell us browser used and computer's operating system? That could help us narrow the issue down more.

I Pad pro
Mac book air 13
Iphone 14

The "Library Thing" is on my Mac book air desk top.

I photographed 4 covers on my I phone. Then went to my MacBook Air. Opened "Library Things". Then went to photos on the Mac book air and attempted to up load the covers (jpeg) This worked for one of the 4 books I had entered (Treasury of Polish Songs) but not for the three others ( Temple Carmina, Union Glee book, The Thanksgiving). I tried uploading from desk top icons, photo file and Finder to no avail.
Next I retook the cover photos with my I pad. I Went to the computer and put them on my desk top as icons, I opened "Library Thing". The covers loaded!

My I phone had an issue this past month. Some upgrade for outlook mail was faulty and caused the mail to close before I could read it. T mobile told me this was a system wide problem and I had to move my email for outlook to the phones email to read it. I can't imagine that that had anything to do with the covers, but who knows?

Thank you for responding so promptly.

I just tried another book. Timbrel. Got a message: Unable to upload this as an image. Same technique that worked an hour ago.

I retook the Timbrel cover on my I pad. When I select the image ( IMG-2048.jpeg) I see it. When I click the upload button, I get the message: OOPS. Unable to process that as an image.

Try try again. I was successful with Temple of Tone cover. This is defying logic. Perhaps I am going insane?

The Tyrolien Lyre just worked. I am on a role.

Advocating again for the app. Seriously, it’s much less painful :0)

Go into ‘Your Catalogue’ on the app and find the book you want, click on it and then click on the camera icon under the image of your current cover. Take the photo, crop it to size, upload it and voila! You’re done.

You might want to try uploading directly from your iPad.

I want to utilize the Universal import.

Can I use more columns that what is shown on the sample spread sheet ( 7) or Do I need to redo my spread sheet with just those 7 columns before trying to upload? ( My Excel spread sheetI uses columns A-V. My categories are Title, Editor, Pub day, denomination, language, condition, musical notation for the first 7 columns. then J-S are favorites hymns contained in the book, T is Publisher, V is where I acquired.)

There are about 1000 books on this spread sheet, last updated 2014. I found it on an old Mac computer and put it on a thumb drive to load onto my newer Mac book air. Where should I put in on the Mac bock air to make it easier to upload to Library thing?

You have to use the columns in the sample just the way they are.

I just realized my spread sheet (worksheet) was created on Numbers not excel. Can I modify the numbers columns to 7 and upload to library thing.

I upload two work sheets for universal import. One uploaded the same day. Waiting for the second one. Only the name of the book appears on my “Your Books list”. The spread sheet had all the information in the columns except USBN numbers. I expected the author, etc data would show up not just the name.

>19 vickila49:

Librarything is extremely rigid regarding the spreadesheet format you can upload. You need to use the exact same columns as in the example file.

I did.
