Summary:
Morrigan Crow is brought up believing she is cursed, but when a stranger turns up and rescues her from her fate, she begins a new set of challenges at the Wundrous Society in the secret realm of Nevermoor.

My notes:
This is one of my favourite books. It is cosy and nice and the characters are awesome. I also love the city of Nevermoor with the talking animals, the Hotel Deucalion and the tricksy lanes.

Book notes and screen notes:
There are three books in this series: Nevermoor, Wundersmith and Hollowpox. A fourth, Silverborn, is to be released soon. It is also going to be made into a movie.

If you liked this, you might like:

Yep, really liked it. Lots of familiar tropes but fabulous world-building and excellently plotted and paced. Great characters. Looking forward to guzzling the rest of the series as a comfort read.

This book had some Time Lord vibes, with the main character being whisked off to a magical realm full of wonder and giant talking cats and a Hotel that changes your room while you sleep. The characters were delightful and the adventure was high. There is a graveyard zombie chase and the bad guy a mass murder, but not much explanation or detail about what that entails.

I really enoyed this third book. I struggled with book 2 but found this book to be more my style. I thoguht this book really did isolate morriagan in some way but also was very focused on a mystery of ilness that had some massive poltical elements and i loved it. It also had elements that was very past focused. I also really liked the other side plots. It was super quick read and really enaging. I am super exited for book 4!

I really enjoyed this book. It was such a prefect middle grade adventure with a mix of fantasy and magic. I really was captivated by the world building and also the characters. I thought the "tasks" kept the plot to be super fast pace and engaging It was such a fun novel to read and hard to put down. I enjoyed the characters alot and loved the developing the "trio of characters that we met. The ending was a tad rushed but Overall, I really loved the book and hope to read book 2 soon!

Nevermoor obviously draws comparisons to Harry Potter, but pretty early on you realize this is very much doing its own uniquely entertaining thing.

This is on the chunkier side yet I never felt the length of it, it isn’t the kind of chunky to be daunted by, nothing felt like filler, it’s descriptive without ever seeming bogged down by those descriptions, it never dragged, it just really satisfyingly moved along especially during the trials (the race was my favorite). So don’t let the size of this one put you off, it’s a page-turner from start to finish, peppered with so, so much creativity, if anything you’ll be sorry it wasn’t even longer.

I was a little concerned early on with so much whimsy, so much playfulness and humor that maybe this wouldn’t strike a chord for me emotionally, but the deeper I went into the story, the deeper the bonds between wonderful little outcast Morrigan and her growing group of friends and supporters (including a most excellent feline named Fenestra) grew, the more attached and invested I became, the more I just fell in love with everything this book had to offer.

Synopsis:

A strange illness is affecting some of the population of Nevermore and Morrigan Crow must try to understand the cause in order to save her friends.

My rating:
4/5

This was my least favorite of the series so far, though it isn't a bad book. This book is very plot focused and I prefer to read character focused books. That heavily affected my enjoyment. There is a lot less of Morrigan interacting with her fellow students and a lot more of her learning about who she is and the powers she possesses. I don't think that's inherently bad I just think it isn't my favorite thing as a reader.

I did think the way that the school worked in this book was very cool and it was significantly different to the way things were working in the previous book. I had a good time seeing Morrigan grow I just wanted that growth to include more of the other characters I love.

One of my biggest issues with this series is that there isn't enough world building and, in some cases, character building. I know this is a middle-grade book and so there are a lot of things that can go unsaid but I still have felt, throughout the series, that too much is not explained. One of those things that had a huge impact on this book was the geography of the world. I couldn't quite wrap my head around not just where places were in relationship to each other but also how those places interacted with each other. We get glimpses that are story relevant but I wanted more to better understand some of the things happening in this book.

I did like how much more we learned about the Wundersmiths in this book. There was a lot of explanation about them and their history was vital to this plot.

Overall I don't think this was a bad book and I do love this series. I just wanted a bit more from it than I got which made me a little sad.

Is it too soon to call this one of my favorite book series ever?

I guessed two major mysteries that I’m sure where meant to be surprises but that didn’t lessen my enjoyment at all. I love this world, these characters, and this story.

While I loved this, it wasn't quite a 5 star for me.

I absolutely loved the fantasy world and magical elements like traveling on a railway with brooms and papers that can think for themselves but unfortunately, I was able to predict most of the plot twists. As a middle-grade novel, I can understand this to a certain extent, however, I have recently been reading a different middle-grade fantasy series that continuously surprises me.

Charming book with a quirky cast of characters that become a found family. The protagonist is reminiscent of Wednesday Adams. There’s magic galore in a fantastical land with bad guys to beat.
Fen the giant cat is fab. Umbrellas come in handy. It’s not very scary so younger readers can enjoy too (although the book is length).
There’s a few mild twists and some world building but nothing too complex. I sense a possible love interest way down the line.

Morrigan Crow was born with a curse, but who cares about the details. This book was really good. I Enjoyed it thoroughly. Everyone I talked to that read this book has said the same thing. It is as good as Harry Potter, but totally different.
I really think this is the start of a fantastic new series.
HAVE FUN!!

Morrigan Crow takes bad luck to a whole other level. She was unlucky enough to be born at the exact time to give her Cursed Child status for her whole life, and all Cursed Children are destined to die when they turn eleven. She has no friends, and a family that doesn't love her, so on the eve of her death when a strange man turns up and cheerfully hurries her away to a new world with him, she goes for it. This fantasy novel is surprising, very suspenseful, and full of adventure and beautiful settings. It's a real nail biter sometimes. I highly recommend the audio recording available for free through Libby. Ask us for help downloading it. If you are looking for an absorbing fantasy series to enjoy, Nevermoor is it!

I highly recommend this fantasy series, and I especially recommend the audiobooks! This was book three, and I really, really hope there will be more. The narration of the audiobooks is excellent, and I love the magical, living, extraordinary city of Nevermoor. The quirky and every-changing hotel that Morrigan lives in, her found family, and the many mysteries of her new life will completely pull you into Morrigan's world.

Morrigan thought that once she passed her trials, the other kids in her unit would be her brothers and sister for life, like she was promised. Instead, they are afraid and suspicious of her, and she is afraid that she will always be an outsider. Even her teachers don't trust her! I recommend the audiobooks of this series. Book 2 is just as suspenseful and fun as the first, and I can't wait to listen to the third book in this series!

I found this to be an enjoyable book with vibrant characters and a quick moving story. I was reminded of the Harry Potter series as I read this book and feel that this flows along the same lines.

Superb. Akin to nonsense fantasy like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or The Phantom Tollbooth, The Trials of Morrigan Crow has a toothsome high fantasy center inside the froth of delicious strangeness. The characters are vivid, the pacing breakneck, and more than once, the writing induced me to fits of laughter. A delight to read alone or aloud...and I cannot wait 'til book two!

Nevermoor was just such a fun read! It’s a middle grade fantasy book filled with a hint of danger and darkness (Morrigan Crow is a Cursed Child, blamed for all local misfortunes, and doomed to die at midnight on her 11th birthday), plenty of charm (the hotel she lives in!) and humour (a Magnificat - a giant talking cat - does the housekeeping). Also there are trials to get into the prestigious Wondrous Society and even after I’ve finished the book I still haven’t quite the faintest idea what the society is about, but I’d love to join it any day (where’s my invitation?)
