The longer I think about this book, the angrier I get. The first page of this tale is written in present tense, which is unusual for a children's book so it caught my attention. Then, inexplicably, when I turned the page I was transported to the past via verb conjugation but it looked just like the present. This. Is. Not. Allowed. There are Rules! Conventions! Children do not need to be given books that will confuse their ability to properly conjugate, especially given the number of irregular verbs the English language is blessed with.

The story and illustrations are perfectly cute but the writing is sloppy and awkward and I would cringe if I ever tried to read it to a child.

I was sent this book by the publisher in exchange for my brutally honest review.

This story is sweet. I reminds me of the story “The Boy who Cried Wolf” when Gertrude and Toby see a little boy. The boy say he see a wolf. If you know that fairy tale story. The moral of the story you think this story is going be somewhat like that.

It also features another story or fairy Tale which is called “The Three Little Pigs”. The author does wonderful with mixing it a bit with the two starting with “The boy who Cried Wolf” scenes and then somewhat changed it to add the “The Three Little Pigs” scenes. The ending is done cute as well.

My favorite is the artwork that is done. The pictures are drawn well. I really like that. They look like some took the time to draw the scene and the the wording was put together after. Who will win their fishing contest?

This is a very interesting premise. Gertrude and Toby live on a farm and when the farmer and his son go off to the fair, they decide to go and explore. This is where the story meets fairytale land. As they are walking they see a magic carpet, they meet up with Hansel and Gretel and actually join forces with the magic carpet to save The Gingerbread Man from a Giant. It is a cute story that kids who have heard the fairytales will probably think is pretty neet. The only problem I have is that after they rescue the Gingerbread Man, there is suddenly a Market Owner who allows the homeless Hansel and Gretel to come and live with him and Toby and Gertrude head back to the farm. Not sure about that ending. As this was a pre-published copy of the book, the illustrations were roughed in, but not complete so I am not sure what they will look like as far as colours go, but the sketches are nice and complement the story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
