Sobre El Autor

Carl Sommer was born in 1933 . He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, and at age 40, he became a New York City public high school teacher. Sommer attended Oswego State University, City College of New York, and New York University, before becoming an assistant dean of boys in a high mostrar más school with 3,600 pupils where he counseled students and parents. His has worked as a substitute teacher at every grade level in twenty-seven different schools in all of the boroughs of New York City. Identifying the problems and needs of America’s students, he proceeded to craft solutions. His exhaustive ten-year study, including a one-year leave of absence from teaching, led to his first book published in 1986, Schools in Crisis: Training for Success or Failure? Sommer then turned to publishing, and while he still felt there was a need for resolutions to the problems within education, he felt that he could help that by helping the children. So he began to write children's books. Sommer created the award-winning Another Sommer-Time Story series of children’s books which impart values and principles of success to younger children; Reading Success, an adult phonics literature-based reading program; Reading Adventure, a children phonics literature-based reading program; and Number Success, a complete practical mathematics series from addition to trigonometry which will consist of 47 teaching videos. The Another Sommer-Time Story Series has been selected as finalist in the Teachers' Choice Awards given by Learning Magazine. The Ugly Caterpillar received the Benjamin Franklin Award for being the best children's picture book, and Mayor For A Day received Today's Librarian award for best children's picture book. His concern for character in American and schools led him to write his most recent book, Character Under Attack. Sommer himself has been nominated for the prestigious International Writer of the Year for 2003 Award by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. He has written over 60 books. Sommer has appeared on radio and television shows, including the Oprah Winfrey Show. He also served on the Texas State Board of Education Review Committee and taught a Junior Achievement economics course at Prague University, in the Czech Republic. Sommer is the founder and president of Advance Publishing, Inc., MediaONE Productions, and Reliable EDM, Inc. (Bowker Author Biography) mostrar menos

This book is a retelling of the Brothers Grimm fable. it is about a group of animals who feel upset at the fact that they are getting older and no longer able to do what they were intended for. They decide to start a band, and while traveling to town they catch the town bank robbers. The book ends with the towns people so thrilled that they helped catch the robbers and the animals get a home as well as being the towns official musicians.

It is a cute and creative story, this could go into a lesson where students can be taught different cultures and times by reading different versions of this book. It could also be used to teach students to not give up, and if you feel that you are at the end of one road, to take a turn and start a new one.… (más)

I really enjoyed reading this short picture book and the meaning that it conveyed. The story is about a young princess that gets made fun of by a couple of her friends; they tell her that her ears and nose are too big. This leads the princess to believe that she is ugly and nobody will like her. Because she now thinks she is ugly, she lets it stop him from doing fun things and spending time with friends/making new friends. She lets someone's mean words change the way she sees herself, and that ruins her life for quite some time. However, her parents tell her that real beauty is from within and she must be happy. Her parents tell her to study how other people fine their happiness. The princess talks to a woman with an even bigger nose and ears than her own, and this woman makes her realize that what matters is being happy and kind to others. The princess changes her attitude, finds self confidence, and goes on to spend her time make other people happy. She looks for a husband that is kind and wise, not just one that has good looks. I love the message that this conveys to young readers. I think this is a great read from young kids, especially young girls, that may struggle with self confidence.… (más)

Basically this guy’s children’s book efforts were rejected by the prominent reviewing sources (School Library Journal and Horn Book Review) so he decides that our public schools are horrible. Not hard to see his motivation: "You rejected me so you suck."
