Greg Marshall

[3.75 stars] It’s a tricky feat to pen a memoir that is both hilarious and heartwarming. Marshall masters this literary juggling act, albeit with a few missteps. Talk about a rollercoaster life. Marshall vividly chronicles his family’s momentous health struggles — including his challenges with cerebral palsy, a diagnosis that was hidden from him for years. Marshall spends a good chunk of the book recounting his comng out as a gay man. One of the book’s flaws is that some vignettes drag on for way too long, a fact that spurred me to skim some of the sections. And now to the humor. As stated in my opening, I found much of the book to be laugh-out-loud delightful. But in an NPR interview, Marshall remarked that his memoir may have had “a little too much bodily humor.” I concur. Some of the graphic passages and dark humor will likely be a turnoff to many readers. That being said, “Leg” is a unique and well-written memoir that underscores a number of valuable life-lessons.… (más)
