Excerpt from With the Flag at Sea The chapters are designed to show the work of the British Navy at some of the most striking periods of its history, beginning with the Armada, and ending with the present generation. Something more than mere fighting accounts has been attempted; details are given of the lives of British officers and seamen in the various periods dealt with, and enough of the causes which led to the engagements to make them understandable in their political 'aspect. It is obviously impossible to do more than deal with representative actions and events, and for this reason many famous battles have had to be ignored, or passed over with only a reference. No single volume can hope to do more than help towards a general understanding of the doings of a vast organization like the British Navy.
