The senior British generals of the Victoria era - men like Wolseley, Roberts, Gordon and Kitchener - were heroes of their time. As soldiers, administrators and battlefield commanders they represented the empire at the height of its power. But they were desperate, sometimes fractious men. They exhibited many of the failings as well as the strengths of the British Army of the late nineteenth century. And now, when the Victorian period is being looked at more critically than before, the moment is right to reassess them as individuals and as soldiers. This balanced and perceptive study of these eminent military men gives a fascinating insight into their careers, into the British army of their day and into a now-remote period when Britain was a world power. AUTHOR: Dr. Steven J. Corvi is a Professor at American Military University. Hid research has concentrated on the First World War and on the British military institutions, and he has a special study of the generalship of Horace Smith-Dorrien. With Ian Beckett he edited Haig's Generals. Professor Ian F.W. Beckett is Professor of History at University of Northampton. He has been Major-General Matthew C. Horner Professor of Military Theory at the US Marine Corps University, Qunatico, Virginia, Professor of Modern History at the University of Luton and Senior Lecturer in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. His many publications include The Great War, 1914-18, The Oxford History of the British Army (co-edited with David Chandler), and, as editor with Steven Corvi, Haig's Generals. SELLING POINTS: --Revealing portraits of the leading British commanders of the late Victorian period --Features studies of Chelmsford, Colley, Gordon, Kitchener, Redvers-Buller, Roberts, Wolseley, Wood --Fresh insight into the leadership skills required in the nineteenth century army --Focuses on the new military technologies used in the low-intensity conflicts of the time --Contributors include Rodney Atwood, Gerald Herman, Stephen Manning, Keith Surridge, John Laband, and Stephen Miller ILLUSTRATIONS 30 illustrations *… (más)
