It starts with Agatha finding out Krosp is a talking cat who decides to help Agatha escape Castle Wulfenbach. Gil makes her his assistant and has her working in his lab with all his tools available. Girl Genius is a web comic about a mad scientists who seem to be able to break the laws of physics, and it all happens in a gaslight/steampunkish universe. Great art, great story and lots of fun. Love Girl Genius - I've been reading them online for quite a while, finally got the books (some of them - there's a couple volumes out that I don't have yet). The story flows nicely between volumes, but I think I can distinguish between them (as I can't for some, like Modesty Blaise). Agatha begins to figure out some of the oddnesses that surround her...she's also being courted (for rather different reasons) by two different men. Lots of lovely scenes - tea with the generals, Agatha being swept back and forth by rescuers on ropes, the fight with the wasps - fun. And a lovely last line. Agatha Heterodyne and the Monster Engine is the third volume in Girl Genius series, here taking from volumes 7-10 of the original comic books. After the last volume picked up with color, this one picks up the story - the titular character finally finds out who she is and starts to learn what this means. The pacing on the title has always been fine, but the more frantic it is, the better the title as a whole works, and the fast stretches here are great with the necessary setup of Agatha now out of the way. The art strains somewhat, though - the characters are occasionally look like dolls rather than people, particularly in the awkward early fight scenes, or Klaus in his lab. The ones later in the book look much better, however, possibly by playing to the artist's strengths rather than weaknesses. The Foglios know what they're doing with the plot as well, as becomes increasingly clear here - the events fit naturally into the timeline of the world and the obviously extensive backstory. After the first third or so of this volume, the series has begun to hit its stride - a creative, entertaining comic read.
There’s plenty of adventure — a big fight against wasp monsters, a crazy hero who swings in at the worst possible moment, plots and double-crosses, fencing — and sudden escapes.
