This beginning identification book is very well-made, and very appealing with the cute and colorful pictures of dinosaurs, but also images from London’s Natural History Museum. Twelve different types of dinosaurs are presented in this book (each is given a descriptive nickname like “Dinosaur Long”, “Dinosaur Slimy”, “Dinosaur Roar”, etc.). For each, the scientific name, pronunciation and meaning of name are provided. A short text gives information on when they lived (an illustrated timeline is also provided at the beginning of the book), their anatomy and sometimes their social habits and the area on Earth where they lived. A helpful dinosaur to man comparison size chart is given for each as well as their weight, defense mechanism(s) and diet. An annotated illustration points out notable features of each dinosaur’s anatomy. The watercolor illustrations make each dinosaur appear quite gentle and not too scary, but images from the Natural HM show each dinosaur in a natural setting, which enables children to see what they really looked like (at least, from what is known about them). This is definitely an excellent introductory book to different kinds of dinosaurs for all kids interested in these animals. A glossary and index are provided at the end. Appropriate for ages 5-8. ( )
