Assigned text for entymology class, but I've kept it for personal reference. Numerous photos help in ID, with the understanding that not all species are present so "close" is not good enough. Very useful key combines description with drawings of key characters and leads you to the proper family. That refers you to introductory essays and the photographed section (

Ask an entomologist what an insect is and he or she will tell you that it is an arthropod with a number of special insectan features, the most obvious of which are a head with mandibles (jaws) and a labium (lower lip), a thorax with three pairs of legs and an abdomen that usually lacks conspicuous appendages.

[Introduction] If insects are worth getting to know as an enemy of humankind, they are even more worthy of attention as our benefactors.

[Preface] This book is based on material originally gathered in support of a third-year entomology course--"The Natural History of Insects"--that I started teaching at University of Guelph in 1982.
