Although surrounded by misconceptions, bats are nonetheless a topic of wonder and fascination for young students eager to learn. This unit is highlighted by dynamic and accurate line art of many species of bats and covers the topic on several fronts: literature, science facts, creative writing, research skills, art and math. The underlying emphasis throughout is on an understanding of this creature that is so often misunderstood and feared. Topics covered include: sizes of various bats, anatomy, comparisons to birds, life cycle, habitat, geographic distribution, food, migration and hibernation, natural enemies and interaction with people. There are poems and a Back to the Bat Cave game, plus pages such as: Bat Murals, Build a Bat Cave, Flying Bat (making a moving, puppet-like bat), activity sheets and patterns. Also includes a My Bat Report page, with which students can build writing and research skills, a critical-thinking Think About It page, a Bat Vocabulary page, and plenty of creative writing exercises. Also features a full-color, two-sided pull-out poster about the World of Bats and Bat Anatomy. Includes complete, step-by-step instructions for all activities.
