Morrison and Quitely deliver the emotional journey of WE3-three house pets weaponized for lethal combat by the government-as they search for 'home' and attempt to ward off the shadowy agency that created them. With nervous systems amplified to match their terrifying mechanical exoskeletons, the members of Animal Weapon 3 (We3) have the firepower of a battalion between them. But they are just the program's prototypes, and now that their testing is complete, they're slated to be permanently decommissioned, causing them to seize their one chance to make a desperate run for freedom. Relentlessly pursued by their makers, the We3 team must navigate a frightening and confusing world where their instincts and heightened abilities make them as much a threat as those hunting them.… (más)

Graphic Novel Bookclub June 2016:

I came out of this book with more sentiment and emotional feeling for the story than I ever expected when I went into it. I wasn't all that moved by the point behind the characters or that the whole story was the runaway, with no real background on what the animals were used for beforehand. Also, I thought it was short sighted and limited that the Level Four animal was only another dog.

I wish there was more about what happens after the end up where they end up at the end,. ( )

This is a comic classic for a reason - the formatting, the panel layout, the limited dialogue that doesn't interfere with the story at all - it's incredibly advanced and thrilling.

But maybe the fact that the simplistic dialogue doesn't interfere with the story is because there's not that much of a story. There's the 3 who are fine-tuned killing machines, good at their job, who are released by a sympathetic scientist when they were to be "decommissioned," and they're on the run. The characterizations play on the stereotypical characteristics of pets - the dog is loyal, the cat is sly and mean, the bunny is... stupid? (The rabbit is the least developed character - I never really understood his motivations or behavior) rather than showing it through interactions or development. ( )

I sincerely hope that no wack-job weapons developer actually takes this book seriously, because using animals as bio-weapons is atrocious. It's bad enough that humans are soldiers in reality, but they at least get a choice about joining a battle. ( )

Maybe the only comic I've ever read that could be described as both "gruesome" and "heartbreaking". (Those cover designs D: ) Morrison and Quitely collapse years of science-run-amok and lost-animal narratives into 3 tight, almost merciless issues. You'll enjoy it but you'll need to hug your pet afterwards. ( )

Three animals are turned into weapons via the use of cybernetic implants. Alright, I'm sold.

The art is gorgeous. The dog and cat are well-developed characters that still feel like a cat and dog. The rabbit is more of a minor character and has far less development. The action is intense, easy to follow, and exciting. The story is formulaic and predictable, but still entertaining and enjoyable. ( )

Morrison, perhaps the greatest writer in comics today, endows his animals with synthesized cyborg speech in which they express their most basic desires for warmth, food and love, as well as their attempts to process their unnatural capacities for violence. "Bad dog," Bandit repeatedly scolds himself after taking down yet another soldier. Quitely's art consists of lucid images of mayhem and sweetness that, in the most impressive spreads, fractalize to express the way these animals "experience time and motion differently." It's a groundbreaking and bravura performance. This is Morrison's most accessible tale ever, and one that is destined to be a classic.

Grant Morrison is sometimes criticized for favoring crazy ideas over storytelling, or for being confusing. This book, with neither of those flaws, is thus his best introduction for a new reader.
