Former bouncer Barker Dodds wants nothing more than to flee his violent past in his native Plymouth for an uncertain new existence as a barber in London's colorful East End. Waif-like Glade Spencer drifts through life as a waitress at a fashionable Soho restaurant, a devoted daughter to her estranged, caravan-dwelling father, and a long-distance girlfriend to an unpredictable American lawyer. And ambitious soft drink branch manager Jimmy Lyle is eager to please his new American boss with a revolutionary marketing strategy for Soft , one that promises to make the new orange-colored beverage a soda sensation for the twenty-first century. It is under that effervescent orange glow that these three disparate souls intersect, as each learns "there is nothing soft about the soft drink industry." When unsuspecting "Soft ambassador" Glade begins to unravel from her subconscious obsession with a product she's never tried, Jimmy's top-secret campaign threatens to spill into the daily papers, and Barker once again finds himself employed as a thug-for-hire. At turns harrowing and darkly humorous, "Soft "is a magnificently surreal story, one that "New York Times" critic Michiko Kakutani calls "Rupert Thomson's most powerful novel yet."… (más)

Exploring the grim underbelly of advertising & its not so subtle connection with brainwashing. A speedy little read, with three complex and engaging main characters locked in a very surreal battle. At times it is frustrating but only due to subject matter and some less than likeable character traits on show. A well-written, pacy little thriller that will make you think twice about your next thirst-quencher. ( )

Contrived nonsense. ( )

At that point Connor paused, and then continued in a quieter, more meditative vein. Success could not be guaranteed, he said, you had to work for it. 'There's nothing soft about the soft-drinks industry,' he concluded, 'nothing soft at all.' His eyes drifted about the room. 'I'd like you to take that thought away with you.'

Since the cover blurb described brand manager Jimmy as 'plunging into the twilight world of synchronised swimming', I expected this book to be funnier and less dark than it turned out to be. But Jimmy's unorthodox ideas for launching Kwench! into the British market have tragic consequences for waitress Glade and reformed hard-man Barker. ( )

I almost didn't continue reading the book, because the beginning is so at odds with the bright cover. It starts describing a down and out fleeing to London to start over with a crappy but honest job.
There are two more storylines that end up interweaving with the the first one, both of which I liked better. I liked the idea of the book but something was missing..couldn't quite put my finger on it, though.
