First published in 1879, this famous treasury of tales from Celtic mythology abounds in brave warriors, fair maidens, monsters, and mermaids. The 13 stories were translated by an expert folklorist from rare Gaelic manuscripts into simple, familiar English. Selections include "The Three Sorrows of Storytelling," metaphorical interpretations of tragic events in Irish history and culture involving the fate of the children of Lir, Turenn, and Usna. AUTHOR: Patrick Weston Joyce (1827-1914) was a noted historian who produced many books about Irish history and culture. His expertise in this area made him the ideal translator of these tales from the original Gaelic, and his retellings are highly readable, offering more color and detail than many other interpretations of Irish folklore. Intensely emotional, and written as if to be told orally or sung out in a forest gathering. They are tales of great journeys, ferocious battles and tragic events. Completely engrossing.
I would object to the cheap, officious font of yester-century, though. Such beautiful words deserve a more respectful font, one that is both easier to read and more reflective of the magnificence of the words.
