Throughout the book, Rachel points out her sisters' differences but her differences is what makes Alicia special. Alicia does what any other girl does like playing with animals and watching horses. She loves Rachel and Rachel loves her. But Rachel can get annoyed with having to take care of her sister all the time. When she gets picked on, Rachel doesn't do anything at first. It keeps happening until Rachel deicides her sister is more important than anything. The author wants to audience to understand what it's like from a close but outside point of view on how Down syndrome effects two different lives. I love how to illustrations are very realistic, almost looking like a photo. ( )

Based on the true story of two sisters, MY SISTER, ALICIA MAY shows young readers the triumphs, joys, and difficulties a family can experience with a member who has down syndrome. The overall message is that of patience and love as told through the eyes of the older sister Rachel. The artwork is visually exciting and will hold the attention of children. Down syndrome is a disability that can make some children uncomfortable because they are visually 'different' and books like these can be a useful tool in helping children feel more comfortable when being introduced to someone with down syndrome for the first time. I found this story really inspirational and I love the bond the older sibling has with her little sister that has down syndrome, through good and the bad times they have together, they are always going to have that special bond and I would recommend ages 4 and up. ( )

This book also made me cry. So I guess that means any book about children disabilities will make me cry. It was so cute though. I also like the perspective from her older sister trying to be her protector and keep her safe from the other kids who are not as nice to Alicia May. I also like the prevalence of this book. I know so many kids with down syndrome and I think that teaching kids how to handle it and treat these other children is very important. ( )
