The year is 53 BC. Fresh from victory in Gaul, Julius Caesar leads battle-hardened legions across the Rubicon riverâ??threatening Rome herself. Even the master strategist Pompey is caught unprepared by the strike, and forced to abandon his city. The armies of Rome will face each other at last in civil war, led by the two greatest generals ever to walk the seven hills. Thus begins Conn Iggulden's towering saga of Julius Caesar as he approaches his final destinyâ??a destiny that will be decided not by legions but by his friend Brutus and an Egyptian queen named Cleopatra, who will bear his only son ...

Enjoyed it! Aside from the fact that the pacing was a bit fast, a ton was covered in this book and there was never a dull moment. If you’ve gotten this far you certainly won’t be disappointed now. ( )

Another great read from the master of historical fiction. Parts of this book are epic. Though not as exciting as previous books for me. ( )

Wow. The truth is really stranger than fiction. Conn Iggulden did put some artistic liberties in the story but the birth of the Roman Empire had more drama then anything we see in TV nowadays. I kept thinking ... no way that happened, but Conn wasn't that far from the truth. Excellent read. ( )

I give this only one star because the author made some terrible factual errors and I am only one third through the book. Labienus was not just some commander in Greece. He had been Caesar's best general in Gaul. In fact, he survived Greece and went on to fight Caesar in Africa and the final battle in Spain. He was probably Caesar's major foe in the Civil War. Also, Brutus was never Caesar's lead general in Gaul. Also. Julia was not still alive. She was Caesar's daughter and Pompey's wife. Her death before the Civil War helped create the estrangement between Pompey and Caesar. ( )

I've decided to Lem the series after book three in paper form and just listen to the audio versions as the series was interesting enough to get me started and invested enough that I feel I need to finish, but not invested enough to read completely.
