This book is a fiction for young adults. There are seven teenagers in this book. Andrew Rabbinowitz, Annalise Glassman, Catlin Hicks, Helen Murvis, Joey Barontini, Edgar Needleman, Marissa Cruz are the six main characters in this book. The seven teenagers in this book are just like the teenagers around us.

Caitlin says, “Professional Highlights: $135 Juicy Couture Handbag: $240
Knowing you're the prettiest girl in high school: priceless.” She is thinking about suggesting Botox to her mother because her mother looks so wrinkled and faded. Marissa awakes to a self-tanning disaster and thinks, “This is so not the back-to-school look.” She gets so caught up in Cosmo’s “Rate Your Self-Esteem” quiz and totally forgets to watch “Americal Idol.” Helen does not like when her mother asks her, “Do you need any maxi pads from the market?” in front of her father. Edgar is not allowed to ask his mother what she is doing in his room reading his Facebook page. He is very depressed. Edgar thinks that the world is cruel when he is assigned Helen as his English partner. However, as the two reenacts the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, the mocking giggles turns to stunned silence. The class erupts in cheers. Edgar thinks that things would be different from now on. He is in love.

The book talks about many characters, but once you become familiar with each one’s characteristics, it’s not hard to catch up. The book has cute and funny full-colour photographs, so it looks a bit like a picturebook for children. The interesting thing is that the book uses yellow chicks for the characters in this book, not humans.

To sum up, this book is great for teenagers, as the seven characters in this book are typical teenagers. It can be a fun book for adults as well because it will bring them memories from high school. Sloane Tanen’s sense of humour will make the readers laugh.

I laughed so hard reading APPETITE FOR DETENTION that everyone in my house thought I'd gone insane. (Okay, yes, they regularly think that anyway, but whatever.) This is one book where the pictures literally are worth a thousand words, even though there are words included.

The life of high school is rendered in all its glory (or, actually, its horror) by chicks. Yes, chicks, the fuzzy yellow things that hatch from eggs. It's really not as stupid as it sounds, I promise.

There's the Princess, the geek, the Jewish kid worrying about his Bar Mitzvah, the depressed guy, the girl obsessed with dieting, the horrible self-tanning accident, the Physical Education class, the lunch room, the football game - basically, it's all there. And it is laugh-out-loud hilarious.

The photographs are amazing. Each student is represented by a particular chick, and it becomes easy within the first few pages to identify who is who even without reading the storyline. Although the words make up the story, it's the photos, with their intricate and amazing details, that make this book a real winner.

And it's not just for teens. Any adult will find the fun in APPETITE FOR DETENTION, whether you're reliving your high school days or just looking for some really good entertainment. You really want to pick up a copy of this book, even if your entire family does end up thinking you're insane. ( )

This is a very quick, but very funny read. Tanen has written a couple of picture books for children featuring fuzzy yellow chicks as characters. The illustrations are 3D collage so that the fuzzy chicks are in a world that she has created and photos are taken. This book is for teens and I was intrigued because I could not imagine a book about fuzzy yellow chicks appealing to teens. It is so funny though. Each of the chicks in the book (some boys, even though they are "chicks") have a name and we get to know their personality and each page is a portrait of some event in their high school days. It takes just minutes to read the whole book and I suggest you take a look. It is original and funny and the high school drama portrayed rings so true! ( )

Amusing, quirkly little book. Pictures of fluffly little chickens embody stereotypes of high school. Very creative, fun to read. ( )
