Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. High school is never easy . . . and when you are suffering from a hubris complex and are convinced that the gods on Olympus have focused their attention on you, things are sure to get even harder. In this smart and sassy debut novel, the spotlight is on Jan Miller-a self-labeled 'Not It' girl struggling to find out what and who she wants. From her best friend, who is an It girl, to her parents, who are way too embarrassing to her crushes (who always seem to be in the right place at the wrong time), there is never a dull moment for Jan. With college application deadlines looming and a group of seemingly vindictive gods ready to sabotage her every move, Jan is about to set off on a memorable trip through senior year and prove that being a 'Not It' girl has some major rewards. From first-time author Melissa Kantor comes a fresh and witty look at senior year from the perspective of one girl convinced she is everything but 'It.'.… (más)

I wavered between three and three-and-a-half stars on this one, but in the end decided on a solid three. There were things about this book that I really liked--Melissa Kantor's dry sense of humor really cracks me up, for one. Jan's imaginary dramas were a cute touch, though eventually they did get to be a bit much. (I'm normally totally in favor of denial and living in an elaborate fantasy world, but they just seemed to go too far, even for a high school senior.) Jan's comments and asides are often very funny and had me laughing out loud quite a bit ("Whoever said honesty is the best policy obviously didn't have much experience with dating" for example), but her attitude toward her parents and her mother in particular gave me pause more than once. Yes, I know teenage daughters and their mothers often have issues. Sure, I didn't always get along wonderfully with mine at that age, but again, Jan goes way too far. At one point, she compares her mother to Stalin, only grudgingly apologises because she figures that's the only way she'll get what she ultimately wants from this conversation with her parents ("I'm sorry, Mom, I should never have compared your cooking to Stalin's extermination of the kulaks.") and then is offended because her mother doesn't say she accepts her apology, because it's "fairly rude" of her not to. The self-centered teenager routine just went a bit too far at times. I know I'm probably showing my age here (and the fact that I have an almost-teenage daughter I'm sure factors in too) but if I talked to or acted toward my parents the way Jan does I'd have been grounded, or worse. I enjoyed Kantor's later book, If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince? much more. More of Kantor's trademark fun snarkiness, less of those factors that I have issues with. ( )

This book is funny, quircky, smart, and witty. It is fast paced and really keeps you reading. Jan's character is so loveable and innocent. The dialogue is fresh and the plot is real. For fans of mystery and suspense, step away now. Unless you're trying something new (you totally should!), this book ain't for you! But anyone who likes realistic fiction, awesome bffl novels, and just plain real life stuff, this is the book for you! It is slightly unknown, so it will probably just be sitting on the shelves gathering dust at your library. You should pick it up! Or borrow it from a friend! Or buy it from Amazon! Or a local bookstore! ( )

This was a pretty good book that was well written. The whole story is about the main character Jan (whose name is pronounced Yahn) trying to get with Josh. It wasn't exactly my thing. Overall it was a good plot, but sometimes along the way I found myself a little annoyed by Jan's best friend. While trying to act more mature, she just looked so much more immature. Plus, Jan herself didn't always make the smartest moves. I liked Jan's little "inserts" of what she would like to happen, I thought they were entertaining and lightened the book a bit more.
Confessions Of a Not It Girl was a page turner, and kept you wanting to know what happened next. ( )

There was nothing wrong with this book, but there wasn't very much right either. it just sort of floated along. It's one of those books I won't remember at all ina month's time, I'm afraid. ( )

Yahn has a problem. She cant seem to find a boyfriend, plus her "it" best friend has had loads of them already! When Yahn meets one that she thinks might just be the one, it doesn't look like it will end up the way she plans. They have a fight, make up, but then everything starts getting awkward. Plus, they were never girlfriend, boyfriend in the first place! Will her dream come true? Or will she just have to keep searching? Find out in "Confessions of A Not It Girl" by Melissa Kantor.

This wasn't one of the best books that I have read. Almost all of it was about boys and didn't really have a main plot other than Yahn getting a boyfriend and about her best friends boyfriend (who thinks shes 21). It was still pretty fun to read though, it was light and different.
