War correspondent Faith Zanetti is newly posted to Moscow. She has been here before, back when the communists were still in power, food shortages were a way of life, public services were collapsing and people were getting away with murder. Literally. Moscow has changed now and so has Faith, but, behind the fast-paced glamour of the new Russia, ghosts from the bleak Soviet past are gathering to haunt her. She deals with terrorist bombs and bizarre prison stories, digs up the bones of her impulsive teenage marriage and grapples with her occasional lover, Eden Jones. Now she's got to fight to stop things spiralling out of control and it's not going to be easy. Sharply observed, honest, moving and totally compulsive, NEAT VODKA is a girl's own adventure for the adrenaline junkie in all of us.… (más)

Anna Blundy does Russia as well as or better than Kaminsky or Cruz Smith. ( )

thriller provides sharp insights into the new Russia vs. the old Soviet Union. Sixteen years after reporter Faith Zanetti left Russia, she returns to Moscow as a correspondent for a London newspaper only to be charged with a double murder- Publisher's Weekly ( )

I read the first few books of of the Faith Zanetti series several years ago, and just got back to it again. Faith is a refreshingly non-cozy mystery heroine. She's a journalist who is typically running around a war zone, drinking and smoking too much, and generally behaving badly. She breaks proper behavior taboos right and left. I think Blundy must have a little checklist next to her keyboard, and ticks them off as she goes.
In this book, she's in Moscow, which is supposed to be a cushy job, except that she turns out to have a past there. As a headstrong 19-year-old, she met and married a charismatic young black marketeer. She left him fairly soon, but upon returning, she finds that he's still alive, is quite successful, and is still in love with her.

Very confused about the publishing order of the Faith Zanetti series here in the US! This is the first I've seen on the shelves, it shows here as #2, but it falls third in the overall series. As a result, although Faith is an enjoyable narrator, I found it hard to take her seriously as a hard-bitten war correspondent. This story takes her out of her comfort zone in several ways, most prominently by forcing her to revisit her past to solve the current mystery, so she comments frequently about how her 'old self' would handle things, but without the back story her characterization felt a bit thin.

(Looks like the first book, -The Bad News Bible-, is also available from Felony & Mayhem.) ( )

Different than the first (this is actually the third in the series), Faith Zanetti finds herself back in Russia running the bureau. Throw in a murder, a thought-to-be-dead husband and some family she didn't know existed and you've got a great story. It doesn't exactly live up to the 'thriller' on the cover, but it is an exciting read. Bonus points for the cultural aspect. After reading this I feel like I know a little more about Russian culture.
