Through full-color, three-dimensional illustrations of the skeleton, major muscles, tendons, and ligaments, Dr. Ray Long describes the science behind yoga. A board certified orthopedic surgeon who has studied yoga for more than 20 years, Dr. Long combines his knowledge of anatomy with his understanding of yoga to present the anatomic structures that are key to your practice of this discipline. The book balances art, science, and spirituality as it traces the forces at work throughout your musculoskeletal system during yoga practice. With an understanding of these structures, you can learn to break through blockages, optimize your experience, and avoid injuries.

—Infos Yoga

If you like to understand what's happening to your body while you use it and you know some basic yoga, I recommend this book (though it's very pricey). Arranged by muscle groups, it has beautiful pictures of how the muscle connects to your skeleton. It then explains how the muscle works and the other muscles around it that help it do its job. Finally there's an section with asanas for activating the muscle, awaking awareness of the muscle, contracting the muscle, and stretching the muscle. The illustrations show a skeleton doing the asana with the activity of the muscle highlighted. ( )

Remarkable computer-generated graphics show muscle positions and functions with great clarity. It suggests that the chakras are associated with different spinal nerves. Not as much mechanical detail as "Anatomy of Movement", but the pictures are very cool. ( )

Ray Long MD FRCSC is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and the founder of Bandha Yoga. Ray graduated from The University of Michigan Medical School with post-graduate training at Cornell University, McGill University, The University of Montreal and Florida Orthopedic Institute. He has studied hatha yoga for over twenty years, training extensively with B.K.S. Iyengar and other leading yoga masters.

His two books in the "Scientific Keys' series, clearly illustrated by Chris Macivor, reveal as never before, the anatomy and physiology of Hatha Yoga asanas.
