For the great majority of women, birth is a natural and uncomplicated process. Unfortunately, though, things can sometimes go wrong. This report examines incidences of maternal death in the UK for the period 1988-1990. The authors stress the need for constant vigilance and expertise in the management of all women so that the minority who develop serious problems receive appropriate treatment.
