2572 The Whims of Fortune: The Memoirs of Guy de Rothschild (read 22 Jan 1994) The author is the great-great-great grandson of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1743-1812), founder of the House. These memoirs were published in 1985 and and are well worth reading. The author fought for France in 1940, was evacuated from Dunkirk, then returned to France! He left France in 1941, came to New York, and joined the Free French in England--after his ship was torpedoed on the way over. The Rothschild bank in France was nationalized in 1982 and he has a last bitter chapter on that. The book includes chapters on his horse racing interests and on balls his second wife put on in 1971 and 1972. Those chapters were quite boring. He brags some, but all in all I didn't mind. ( )
