This is a great book for inspiring scientific inquiry. It goes over the history and folklore surrounding rainbows. It gives great scientific facts about rainbows and makes them accessible to kids. Most importantly though, it encourages kids to go out and observe rainbows in the world, both those that occur naturally and how to create one for themselves. ( )

The Rainbow and You is a book all about, well, rainbows. It discusses the origin of the word, who discovered them, what they really are, and what people in the past thought about the magic of rainbows. I actually learned new things from this book. It is very informative. I remember seeing the prism and the rainbow in a science textbook when I was younger but I don't remember anything from it because it wasn't intriguing or easy for me to comprehend. This book uses a character named Roy G. Biv to gain the interest of the readers and also explains how it works in a simple way. ( )

The book is really interesting. I like how the book informs students without making it to complicated. The book is set up in a way that the reader is a rainbow detective and it’s their job to understand rainbows. It also gives you the history of rainbows from Siberia, to Greek mythology and even the bible. It also tells how the light bends to make rainbows. I liked it very much and would recommend its use. The Rainbow and You begins by explaining to the reader that even though there is no pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, "[t]he real treasure of the rainbow is its colors." The book then explains how one could learn the colors and order of a rainbow by remembering the name "Roy G. Biv", which stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The book then explained the origin of the term "rainbow" and why it's possible that we see them. There is a beautifully illustrated equation of a sun + rain = rainbow, followed by several different rainbow beliefs from ancient Greeks, Vikings, Native Americans, Siberians, and the Bible. It gives a brief lesson on how light bends and how Newton was able to explain this phenomenon. Also interesting, it explains how we all see different rainbows with our different eyes, that no one will see exactly the same rainbow. I really enjoyed this book and enjoyed reading it to my children. The illustrations are engaging and beautiful. I would definitely recommend. ( )
