Fantasy. Romance. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:

An imprisoned prince. A vengeful queen. And a battle that will determine the future of Elfhame.

Prince Oak is paying for his betrayal. Imprisoned in the icy north and bound to the will of a monstrous new queen, he must rely on charm and calculation to survive. With High King Cardan and High Queen Jude willing to use any means necessary to retrieve their stolen heir, Oak will have to decide whether to attempt regaining the trust of the girl he’s always loved or to remain loyal to Elfhame and hand over the means to end her reign—even if it means ending Wren, too.

With a new war looming on the horizon and treachery lurking in every corner, neither Oak’s guile nor his wit will be enough to keep everyone he loves alive. It’s just a question of whom he will doom.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black comes the stunning blood-soaked conclusion to the Stolen Heir duology.

4.5 stars - this was slower going than the first one. I think the duology would've benefited from a dual POV in both books than just Wren in the 1st and just Oak in the 2nd. Wren's POV in the 1st was so compelling I was sad not to have it here. But the last 1/2 of the book really hit off and made up for some sluggishness earlier. Overall there was a lot more action and intrigue than in The Stolen Heir, which was more contemplative. Also we actually get to see Cardan and Jude!!! ( )

It took a few chapters to get up to speed, but then it was fun to follow Oak and Wren as they do a dance that's part romance, part high court intrigue, and a bit of treachery. I'd be happy to have both of them come on my next quest. ( )

So the last book ending left me in a quandary, I KNEW what the characters should be doing, but of course I’m not them so they had to figure it out. They do, and it’s best that way, but still. I did very much enjoy this one, and seeing Carden recognize what Oak was up to was interesting (I’m liking him more and more - maybe I should reread the first books with this perspective?). Elfhame is settled, and I don’t want anything to go wrong for the characters, but I’d like to see them again, so… ( )
