Net terug uit Firenze, met dit boek in mijn koffer. Per wijk eerst gedetailleerde overzichten van gebouwen, kunstwerken en andere, maar dan gevolgd door uitgebreide toelichtingen, achtergrondgeschiedenissen en persoonlijke inzichten van de auteur, die alles tot leven brengen. De eerste editie dateert van 1966 en is verschillende keren bijgewerkt, maar je begint wel te merken dat het wat verouderd is. Toch de moeite om mee te nemen, als tegenhanger voor de oppervlakkige moderne gidsjes. (Overigens vind ik Firenze een prachtige stad met tal van wonderlijke kunstwerken, maar alleen maar genietbaar voor 10 uur 's ochtends, voor de horden toeristen buitenkomen). ( )
