In 1957, when Ralph Ketner, his brother, Brown, & their friend, Wilson Smith, began calling on friends & neighbors in Salisbury, North Carolina, seeking money to open a supermarket, the response was favorable. After all, they weren't asking for much: as little as $100, no more than $1,000. What nobody imagined was just how big a success their supermarket would be. That first store, which opened in December 1957, grew into the Food Lion supermarket chain, with hundreds of stores & billions in annual sales. And 87 people who took the offer to invest ended up millionaires as a result. Mark Wineka & Jason Lesley interviewed all of the founders, investors & top executives to tell one of America's most phenomenally successful business stories.
