In a barracks on an abandoned military base, miles from the nearest road, Thomas watches as the man he has brought wakes up. Kev, a NASA astronaut, doesn't recognize his captor, though Thomas remembers him. Kev cries for help. He pulls at his chain. But the ocean is close by, and nobody can hear him over the waves and wind. Thomas apologizes. He didn't want to have to resort to this. But they really needed to have a conversation, and Kev didn't answer his messages. And now, if Kev can just stop yelling, Thomas has a few questions.… (más)

Not my favorite book by Eggers. ( )

Started off with such promise, but then petered out horribly around the fourth kidnapping.
Granted, it's been years since I've read any Dave Eggers, but I remember him being a bit deeper than this - or perhaps I have changed and expect a bit different from my post-post-modern authors. ( )

A friend recommended the audio version of this book but I got the print version. I liked it a lot even in print. It's serious, angry, and funny (with a touch of what's good in George Saunders here and there, I think), and it resonated on a number of frequencies for me. It's also a quick read, one that I could imagine going back to sometime between other books. ( )

I was going to rate this a 4 but that ending was ridiculous.

The entire story was written in dialog where the protagonist is speaking either to those people he's seeking answers from or to himself while working things out. This format, albeit a little unusual, really works well as an audiobook. If you've ever listened to a "full cast audio" it was very similar to that format.

I was absolutely captivated by this story from the very beginning. I kept thinking that I really need to read some more of this author's books- --but then that ending; abrupt and without anything resembling resolution. It just .... stopped. That is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves.

Still, fascinating story & brilliant audio narration ( )

This book is political only in the degraded way that cable news is political — it’s uninterested in the nuances of policy because it’s already certain of which side it’s on. In that way, it’s a fitting document of our current level of political discourse. If I want certainty these days, there are plenty of pundits willing to sell it to me. I turn to literature, though, because when done right it provides something much more honest.
