"An annual backpacking trip has deadly consequences in a chilling new novel from the bestselling author of The Lost Night and The Herd. Emily is having the time of her life--she's in the mountains of Chile with her best friend, Kristen, on their annual reunion trip, and the women are feeling closer than ever. But on the last night of their trip, Emily enters their hotel suite to find blood and broken glass on the floor. Kristen says the cute backpacker she'd been flirting with attacked her, and she had no choice but to kill him in self-defense. Even more shocking: The scene is horrifyingly similar to last year's trip, when another backpacker wound up dead. Emily can't believe it's happened again--can lightning really strike twice? Back home in Wisconsin, Emily struggles to bury her trauma, diving head-first into a new relationship and throwing herself into work. But when Kristen shows up for a surprise visit, Emily is forced to to confront their violent past. The more Kristen tries to keep Emily close, the more Emily questions her friend's motives. As Emily feels the walls closing in on their coverups, she must reckon with the truth about her closest friend. Can she outrun the secrets she shares with Kristen, or will they destroy her relationship, her freedom--even her life?"--… (más)

The whole bestie snogfest is making me gag. Are all millennials this needy? This unable to do anything by themselves? It's nuts. So smothering. Stand up for yourselves already, on your own two feet. Perhaps you need Adulting for Dummies.

And duh! K is BLATANTLY manipulative. E can't see this at all? Really? I thought the kids of this generation were masters of manipulation. I guess it's only when it's not happening to them.

Stuck with it to the end. No one got any smarter, really, but there were a couple of unexpected developments and I think it ended fairly well. I'm so done with this writer though. Ugh. I weep for the future. ( )

I have quite mixed feelings about this book. Let’s start with - there is nothing at all wrong with it. The writing is strong, too strong at times, if you will, and that may be some of my reticence about moving beyond liking to loving the book. Ms. Bartz is obviously very well-written and understands and uses unusual and unique words fluently, however, the plot did not require that type of verbiage. To me, the use of these unique and unusual words almost felt like the overuse of a thesaurus, forced, trying to “sound smart.”

The storyline was good, the concept was also good, the gaslighting from one BFF of the other for the ten-year length of their friendship, which includes, who actually killed both backpackers in two different countries on two different girls’ trips. Again, a good story, but, surprisingly, too predicable, and too forced.

The ending is a lot of story dumping to wrap up the lose ends; a telling of events. And then the last line or two was an attempted red herring.

We Were Never Here is a decent book, but do have a dictionary standing by for the zinger words. ( )

Pretty good, but the beginning definitely dragged ( )

I'm really surprised at how much I enjoyed this and truly surprised with how well this was written; while the ending was tidy (maybe a bit too tidy), I loved the build up to the major conflict.

Like books about books, this girl absolutely STANS an unreliable narrator. ( )

The story line is interesting. Emily and her friend Kristen are friends from college. They decide to spend their savings travelling around the world together. But after two murders they return to the United States and aim to not get caught. But one of them discovers that the other has more than two suspicious deaths in their past. How can their friendship last and how can they not get caught?
The overall story had an interesting plot. The first half of the book was interesting with the changes in settings, learning the characters, and of the murders.
The last half of the book is where it went downhill. The main characters are very weak in their own ways and the story became horribly predictable at every page turn. Was looking for a great ending but didn’t really get it. One bit of action at the end that was slightly surprising but also not. The story overall became unrealistic. Needed more action, stronger characters, and a more believable ending.

★★ Honestly I wouldn’t recommend. There’s much better psychological thrillers out there. ( )
