In Dolende zielen worden bij een archeologisch opgraving menselijke botten gevonden op het land van de familie Cowley. Deze boerenfamilie pacht het land al decennia lang van de welgestelde familie Preece. Als uit forensisch onderzoek blijkt dat er afschuwelijke dingen met deze mensen moet en zijn gebeurd, wordt Kim Stone ingeschakeld. Omdat de plek van de vondst op de grens ligt van twee politiedistricten moet Kim gedwongen samenwerken met Tom Travis, een oud collega met wie zij niet graag wil samenwerken vanwege een incident een paar jaar eerder. De gedwongen samenwerking leidt echter wel tot de uiteindelijke oplossing van de zaak. Zeker als haar collega Stacey Wood door een eigen onderzoek wordt ontvoerd en de geschiedenis zich lijkt te herhalen. Het onderliggende motief blijkt rond haatmisdrijven en discriminatie te draaien. When the remains of several bodies are discovered in a field during a routine archaeological dig, D.I. Kim Stone is forced to work alongside her old partner and nemesis, Tom Travis. As the details of the victims' identities and the extent of their suffering are revealed, Kim realizes that human depravity and evil come in all manner of guises.

The theme of this installment is definitely one of the more disturbing and troubling in the series, and that is saying a lot considering some of the cases Kim has investigated. A significant part of this is due to the fact that the circumstances are so terribly realistic and true to life.

As always, it is rather easy to figure out the identity of the culprit and their motivation. Nevertheless, this does not detract from the tension and suspense of the climax and resolution.

The development of Stacey's character is a highlight of the book as readers have learned very little about her up until now. Moreover, it is good to finally learn the source of the animosity between Kim and Travis that was so intriguing at the beginning of the series.

In sum, another gripping book and I look forward to reading the next one soon. ( )

Uno scavo archeologico riporta alla luce delle ossa umane, e saranno la base di partenza di un’indagine che si rivelerà molto complessa e dai terribili risvolti.
Stavolta Kim Stone e la sua squadra si troveranno ad indagare separatamente su una serie di crimini d’odio e di razzismo della peggior specie.
Avvincente ed emozionante, un altro libro della serie da non perdere.

Great book from a great series. A lot is happening from both the past and the present, with lots of different strands to one big mystery. I got to know more about the main characters in this book, and feel I like them all more now The characters are a huge asset to the mysteries. I won't go into the storyline, as it's way too complicated for me to even start on. ( )

Certo che se questo libro ha vinto il premio Bancarella vuol dire che la concorrenza era ancora più scarsa!
La Marsons, di cui ho letto finora quasi tutto, può vantare i peggiori finali di romanzi gialli, così improbabili che viene da ridere a leggerli.
