Should she go to 6th form or get a sensible job as a hairdresser? Her widowed father's new fiancee Christine obviously wants Evie out of the way but Evie is convinced that the blousy woman is just after her father's money. Evie is closer to her older neighbour who knew her mother. Really all Evie wants to do is to experience the bright lights and marry Adam Faith. This book is a real joy! Obviously as I am a Yorkshire lass I have a soft spot for this tale but really it's just a lovely lightweight summer read. Every cliche about Yorkshire is in there but it doesn't matter, Evie is a gauche and loveable character and the setting in the early sixties is well-imagined. The reviews for this book are well-justified! sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
'Tight, clever and riddled with wit. Like discovering Adrian Mole or Bridget Jones for the first time.' Joanna Nadin, author of The Queen of Bloody Everything 'Full of fabulous characters, sprinkled with joy and drenched in wit.' Milly Johnson July, 1962 Sixteen year-old Evie Epworth stands on the cusp of womanhood. But what kind of a woman will she become? The fastest milk bottle-delivery girl in East Yorkshire, Evie is tall as a tree and hot as the desert sand. She dreams of an independent life lived under the bright lights of London (or Leeds). The two posters of Adam Faith on her bedroom wall ('brooding Adam' and 'sophisticated Adam') offer wise counsel about a future beyond rural East Yorkshire. Her role models are Charlotte Bronte, Shirley MacLaine and the Queen. But, before she can decide on a career, she must first deal with the malign presence of her future step-mother, the manipulative and money-grubbing Christine. If Evie can rescue her bereaved father, Arthur, from Christine's pink and over-perfumed clutches, and save the farmhouse from being sold off then maybe she can move on with her own life and finally work out exactly who it is she is meant to be. Moving, inventive and richly comic, The Miseducation of Evie Epworth is the most joyful debut novel of the year and the best thing to have come out of Yorkshire since Wensleydale cheese. This is a beautifully written, highly engaging and humorous story with some laugh out loud moments. There is a whole cast of fascinating and vibrant characters and what an eclectic, vividly depicted bunch they are! The author did a great job of bringing them alive on the page for me. It’s also a nostalgic read and harks back, in my opinion, to a gentler era. It was such a joy to read and I was so sad to turn the last page. I absolutely loved it! I was easily transported to Evie’s world and will miss her dreadfully. I, for one, cannot wait for the sequel! ( )
