Echo Quickthorn Together with her pet lizard, Gilbert, Echo sets off on an incredible adventure to find her missing mother; an adventure that will take her to unimaginable places filled with giant butterflies, mechanical dragons and . . . sky pirates! A spirited protagonist, a charming side-kick and a believable villain come together in this tightly plotted, visual, treat for the senses. I want to soar over the rainbow rooftops of Port Tourbillon and the toadstooled forests of Tyrian in my very own airship. A breath-taking adventure and a wonderfully imagined story of friendship and danger in strange places. This is an incredible adventure, brimming with friendship and danger. A very easily readable steampunk fairytale adventure, though I missed depth.
As soon as the the pirates, the riddle and the hairpin were mentioned, I knew where they would lead, and the book led exactly to what I expected. No surprises.
The characters were likeable but felt simple sometimes. Echo is relentlessly optimistic and was the only person curious about the outside world, which I felt was a little overdone.
I hoped for steampunk airship pirates, but they weren't morally gray in any way. (They are only stealing from the rich because orphans are starving) ( )
