WELCOME TO YOUR DREAMTIME is a novel, though portions of it were first published as free-standing stories in 6 different online and ink-and-paper magazines. The premise is simple--in the near future a device marketed as the Dreammaster is developed which allows you to buy dreams as if they were films or video games. You buy a chip with a dream on it or download on, plug it into the Dreamaster, put on the headband and experience the dream you have bought.Simple premise, but WELCOME TO YOUR DREAMTIME is no simple novel, and editors I suggested to, including the best editor I had ever worked wth, the late David Hartwell, told me that want I wanted to do was not merely the most radical form he had ever heard of, but plain impossible to write. Why?Because the lead characters in the dreams, dreams being what we k now they are, had to be you, the reader. The novel therefore had to be written virtually entirely in second person singular in present tense to immerse the readers in the dream realities. I wasn't so sure myelf that I or anyone else could bring this off, so I didn't even want the usual contract until I had proven to myself that I could do it by publishing 6 "dreams" to magazines without even telling them the background premise. On top of that, WELCOME TO YOUR DREAMTIME is a real novel, not a story collection because the overall tale is the rise of of what is born as schlock into a serious artform, its cooption by media pirates, and it's redemption, and you the reader will be the hero and/or heroineolf this tale/.This much I can promise all readers. But in the finale, I do believe that some of you at least, will learn how to enter your own dreamtimes as the creators thereof.… (más)
