Latin American fascism was different from the European variety in that it lacked socialist roots and did not proclaim revolution nor mobilize the masses; rather it was rightist and very conservative. The differences between the mother brand of Italian fascism and the Latin American varieties are clearly on the minds of the authors, even when not dealt with directly. Four essays consider various aspects of the Integralista experience in Brazil, while others compare Mexican and Irish movements, seeking to weigh the effects of Catholic influence; another examined the postwar Argentine mix. Two final chapters mined Brazilian and Portuguese Church-state relations and scrutinized recent Integralista ideology as a conservative nationalism in the era of globalization.
