This collection of interdisciplinary essays resulted from the first colloquium on the history of the Otomi of the Eastern Sierra Madre and their neighbors in present-day Mexico. The eastern Otomies include people from the states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz, and Tlaxcala. Their neighbors are Nahuas, Tepehuas, and Totonacs. The essays reflect a wide array of themes discussed in the eight {mesas} of the conference: history; archeology; religion; population diversity; cosmovision, ritual, and myth; social organization; daily life; the environment; ethnobotany; language and ethnography; identity; and migration.
