Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air. Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return. As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls' mother, and he's not leaving without them. To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they've grown up with: never go beyond the forest. Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They'll discover what's been hidden from them, what they're running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.… (más)

This is my second Minka Kent book! In Thin Air was a book I enjoyed so I needed to continue the series. Two sisters have been kept from the outside world their entire lives. Mama forbids Wren & Sage from contact with anyone; they live in squalor; a cabin without plumbing or water, and food is scarce - only what is grown & livestock they tend. Their clothes are threadbare and they are malnourished.
Wren & Sage also have a little sister, Evie, but don't understand how she got there or where she came from. One day she was just there. Then Evie becomes very ill & mama leaves the girls to get medical help for Evie. Months go by & they never return Why did mama leave them to die? Then a male visitor shows up. They don't know him but he seems to know mama. And he has his own plans for the girls. Forced to face their fears of the unknown, they escape into the wilderness of Stillwater forest. From there, Wren & Sage discover that life outside the forest is nothing like mama said. Follow Wren & Sage into new lives that intersect with wonderful people, all willing to help. Even the police are trying to find mama & Evie. But there are secrets and more questions; nothing is clear. Did mama lie to them about their lives? Why would she leave them to die? Who can be trusted in their new world? This was one book that
I really wish was a movie because honestly this was a great read. The story was written well and I will be doing more Minka Kent in the future. The writing is smooth and enjoyable five starts all the way.

Excellent Read!

I was thoroughly engrossed in this book from the beginning. The character development of Nicollete and Wren was done very well, as they were the two main people telling the story. It started off, seeming to go in different directions, making you wonder how it was going to come together. It was brought together nicely and smoothly. Near the end of the story, however, is where I felt as if it seemed rushed or details were a little vague. You were left wondering what happened with another sister, Sage, and her overall outcome, as well as the overall mental overhaul the whole situation had on the families. This was why I did not give a five star rating. ( )

“The world’s an evil place, my darlings”

I consumed this audiobook in one sitting. It was told from two different perspectives and I was shocked to discover how they intertwined.
If you enjoy jaw dropping twisted endings, this is definitely one for you! ( )

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.

This was my first Minka Kent book, and I could not connect. Spoilers ahead.

First, let me say that the writing is engaging, and so easy to read - she has a way with the flow of words. I like the idea of parts of the story - I love the idea the kids being raised away from civilization, and being confronted with it later on.

But I had too many issues with storyline, which I felt were just wrong (granted, I do not know much about postpartum psychosis - can you really just forget you had a baby - and a whole world around you that does not mention ANYTHING??) and some were so obvious it hurt - the brother.

Even though the writing was strong and despite some really good characters (Wren), this was not a story for me. It did however introduce a new author, and I am always glad for that. ( )

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*
I really enjoyed this story. I was sucked into Wren and Sage's saga, and I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to know how their story intersected with Nic and Brant's. I thought the characters were well developed. The ending was a let down, though. It just seemed like everything wrapped up too neatly for my taste. I was expecting something more I guess. Still it was a good story and I'll read this author again. ( )
