Surrounded by a group of devoted four-footed and two-winged family members, Zak and Killian have built what should have been a dream life in their countryside farmhouse. But a cruel twist of fate and the re-emergence of old demons has frayed the edges of the men's seven-year relationship until just one wrong move could end up severing their bond for good.Seemingly content to walk on eggshells around one another, things come to a head when ER nurse Zak brings his work home with him... literally. After being forced to leave their posh Southern California lives, homeless stepbrothers Liam and Noah are slowly losing themselves to the streets they can't seem to escape. When twenty-one-year-old Liam is beaten up while protecting his younger "brother," the pair find themselves being welcomed into a home where being a stray is considered a good thing. But Liam and nineteen-year-old Noah have learned the hard way that nothing is given for free and there's no such thing as the kindness of strangers. Survival means only counting on and trusting in each other. Will Zak and Killian's offer of a no-strings-attached place to heal end up being more than any of the four men bargained for? Especially when feelings between Liam and Noah begin to crawl to the surface and the truth of what Zak and Killian's relationship has turned into becomes harder to deny? And what happens when lines begin to blur and needs start to change? Will Zak, Killian, Liam, and Noah end up going their separate waysOr will they learn that love doesn't always come in twos?*This is a novel about a foursome relationship, not just a story of two separate couples in physical relationships with one another. Thus, there is no "cheating" in this story. It is a standalone novel.Trigger Warning: The trigger warnings in this book may be considered "spoilerish" so they can be found by using the "Look Inside" feature or by downloading the sample and going to the section entitled "Trigger Warning."… (más)

Zak and Killian have a habit of taking in strays. They’ve been together for about seven years, and although they are having some major issues, they have built a unique family, complete with various dogs, a mini horse, some other species of livestock and some birds, including a disabled Toucan. This couple is doing fairly well but not exactly anything to "write home to mother about", then Zak brings Noah home. Noah is a young man that Zack has met at the hospital where he works. Things get crazier when Noah’s brother, Liam, shows up to collect his brother. Realizing these two are in some kind of trouble and are on the streets, Zak and Killian give them a safe place to stay while they get on their feet. The main theme in this story is not so much the four guys but the irritating lack of communication. You know right off that Zak and Killian are having problems, some of them because Zak forced Killian to give up his dream and Killian, as a result has practically become an alcoholic. It seemed to take forever for us to get the real, whole story behind their issues. They both say they just need to talk to each other and I 100% agreed with them. What took them so long??? Of course, it just never seemed to happen for one reason or another. Can you say FRUSTRATING? Liam and Noah were no better. In spite of all this the four thought it would be a good idea to share a relationship. Well, I thought, "why not? If two people that have been together for 7 years can't talk about their problems...lets add two more almost complete strangers!" Things did come together at the end. How I will never know. I just had to keep reading to see if any of the guys had learned anything at all or if the four-legged animals in the story were smarter than the two-legged ones. ( )

Good. Could have been so much better.

None of these men has had an easy life, and you feel that viscerally. Content warning should include child abuse, attempted rape, care of mistreated animals, child abandonment... The characters are distinct - except in the case of their attraction to each other. The insta-love was the same for all four? While I finished reading this, I have to say that's improbable between four people all new to the concept of polyamory. But worse is the sloppier editing toward the end. I like to see polyam being explored more in Romance, and this is one of the better ones I've read. But it could have been better. ( )

I had too many problems with the story, hence rounding down instead of up. The writing itself was okay, but the story gave me kind of an uncomfortable vibe.

I didn't like the way the author tried to keep us on our toes about the reason Zak and Killian were at odds. It was too on the nose and frankly, quite frustrating to read. I didn't feel like someone was dangling a carrot in front of me as much as someone was hitting me repeatedly over the head with it. I wanted to drop the book more than once because of it.

Noah and Liam were just too young to show as much emotional maturity as they did. I realize this is very subjective, but Noah is what, 19? And Liam is 21. For them to be so mature as to know they are in love (as opposed to in lust) with each other AND another couple in the matter of days was just too unrealistic to me. A relationship between two fresh new young adults is hard enough on its own, no matter what they went through in their lives. If you throw an adult 30-something couple into that bag, I would expect chaos to ensue, not insta-love.

And the insta-love was really too much. I felt cheated with the way they all just unquestioningly "knew" the moment they met, and every POV sounded like they were repeating the same sentence verbatim, not even a slight variation - "I love X and Y, but it doesn't take away from my love for Z". That just seemed like lazy writing.

I don't think this author's writing is for me, but as this was the first book I tried I'd be willing to give them another chance at some point now that my expectations are set. ( )

I really loved this book. I was in from the very beginning. It is very rare that I finish a book that isn't an audiobook in one day but whenever I had any time to spare, I was picking this up. I know maybe one difference between me and other reviewers is that I really like polyamorous romance books, as long as they're well written so I wasn't nervous about this being a MMMM story. I was nervous because I had just read a different Sloane Kennedy book and I didn't love it. This one was so much better for me, I was honestly blown away.

I adored the characters in this book. I loved how the relationships developed, first between the two couples and then with all four of them. Yes there were times where the plot relied a bit on lack of communication, which usually I really don't like, but I thought it played well in this story and it resolved really well. I thought the characters had great, distinctive personalities, and you could see exactly why they would mesh together. Each party in the relationship was just so caring towards everyone else and I loved how the relationship really helped them each grow as people, which is really what I want out of a good romance.

This is really just such a good book and it makes me excited to read more of Sloane Kennedy's books in the future! ( )
