During the second year of the WWII siege on Leningrad, Soviet sniper Sara and her seven female comrades are fighting against he Nazi invaders. At this point in the war the Soviets are losing the battle but the women try to make headway in the war be effecting one kill at a time. Sara is the undisputed best shot. She has become a legend in the minds of the Nazis who say that she has killed over 300 Nazi soldiers. They deploy their best fighters to find Sara and kill her.

This is a classic war story told in comic book format. The book combines six issues of a comic by the same name and it is based on a true story. We see the horrors of war here with our heroine booby trapping dead Nazi soldiers with grenades. When the Nazis find the bodies, they turn them over to identify the victim which activates the grenade and killing themselves. This trick is an easy way for Sara to increase her kill numbers.

Sara is an impressive narrative of a soldiers' lives fighting for survival on the Eastern Front in WWII. Highly recommended. ( )

Another dark, brutal, and completely amazing World War II adventure from Garth Ennis. The artwork by Steve Epting is beautiful even when depicting the brutality of war.

Sara is part of a team of female snipers trying to beat back the Nazi invasion one well-placed bullet at a time. This is fiction, but there were indeed such women soldiers fighting for the Soviet Union. Ennis does not glamorize the women or go for over-the-top action like a Charlie's Angels movie. These are serious warriors fighting for their lives and the lives of their comrades. ( )

This new graphic novel is a beautifully-drawn, powerfully-told story about a group of seven Soviet female snipers during the Second World War. Sara, the best shot in the group, is plagued by doubts about the Soviet regime and struggles to suppress her desire to speak out. A chilling tale of sacrifice and revenge. ( )
