I have to admit the book cover was the reason why I borrowed this book from my local library. So glad that the story was as awesome as the book cover.

The story is all about Alyssa a skater girl who can hear plants and bugs talk. She is a descendant of "The Alice in Wonderland". She refuse to end up in the asylum like her mother and all the other women in her family. The women in their family have this curse after Alice visited Wonderland. Alyssa needs to go back to Wonderland to right the wrong that Alice have supposedly have done and end the curse.

This is totally different from my favorite book when I was a kid, Alice in Wonderland. The Wonderland in this book is more dark and I love it. If I have not gotten sick I would have finished reading this in a day or two. The story is so engaging and the plot twist was definitely great. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to read the second installment. ( )

This could have been so much better. Fun and interesting concepts, the main storyline was interesting. But gods save me from love triangles where both options are controlling assholes and I'd prefer the heroine to say, "Nah, fuck you assholes!" rather than whatever ends up happening. ( )

If you are familiar with Alice in Wonderland tale (which is more adult fare than children's) you'll like this take on it. There a nice little twist on the end of who Alyssa really is, and while there is a love triangle of sorts- really YA writers we need to GET AWAY from that- this triangle is more of an angel and devil on each of her shoulders. One who tries to (over)protect her in a vice-like controlling way [for her own good- and yea, that's HIGHLY annoying] and the other constantly cajoling her and plying her with seductive compliments on who she is and what she can become with an agenda all his own. So who is she supposed to trust and turn to for help and advice? Exactly...

I did also enjoy the imagery Howard puts forth with regard to Wonderland- darkly disturbing and yet still fantastical- which is why I thought the original should have always been for adults- that stuff is not kid friendly. I'm off ( )
