First sentence: "I wish I were a tiger," says Fox. "Tigers are big. Tigers are fast. Tigers are sneaky. Tigers are the best." Fox has an idea.

Premise/plot: Fox the Tiger won the Theodore Seuss Geisel Award for 2019. In this I Can Read early reader, Fox has an IDEA that becomes contagious. He wants to be a tiger...so he paints on some stripes. He then goes out to face the world as a tiger...or does he? Will his paint fool anyone?

My thoughts: I really enjoyed this one. It was FUN. I am glad that Fox's idea is so contagious. I loved seeing what would happen next. (For example, the turtle decides to become a RACE CAR and paints the number 4 on his shell.) I loved the text and story. I loved the illustrations. I loved the humor--and the heart. ( )

This book is for early readers, I think this would be good for first graders and second graders to read.

This book talks about a fox. He sees tigers and has an idea. Fox turns himself into a tiger by adding black stripes to his fur. He pretends to be a tiger. His friend turtle, wants to become a race car. Rabbit wants to be a robot and becomes a robot. It starts to rain and the things that they did to become something else disappear and they become themselves again. A squirrel sees a fox and is so excited about how awesome foxes are. Fox is glad to be a fox.

This is a good book. It was very cute. I think this would be a good read aloud, and it would convey a good message to students. It would explain to them that they should be happy in their own skin. Sometimes we all experience the feeling of thinking something else is better, but we should try to be happy with who we are and be around people who are happy with who we are as well. This would be a great book for students to read on their own time as well because it is a very simple read. ( )

I recommend this when you want to teach a lesson about being yourself. I like how fox looks up to the tiger and how squirrel looks up to fox. What were the odds turtle wanted to be a race car. Cute book. ( )

After reading a book about how magnificent tigers are, Fox wishes he were a tiger. Soon his friends start imagining all the cool things they could be also.

One really nice thing about this book was the subtle message about how the unique being you are is important -- you don't have to emulate something you think is 'cool' for someone else to admire you.

I also liked the idea that the characters could briefly pretend to be something else. However, I wasn't a huge fan of how painting some stripes on Fox makes him "Tiger" for a while. I get that it's for children and it's meant to be amusing, but it feels just barely acceptable for these anthropomorphic animals; if these were people, it would be the equivalent of cultural appropriation.

The illustrations fit the text well, with a delicate style and a fairly muted palette. ( )
