A lucid but superficial survey, followed by a selection of documents translated (mostly from Latin) into French. It was translated into English much later under the same title: The Idea of Empire in the West from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Centuries. I haven't seen the translation, and don't know if the author incorporated any additions, revisions, or corrections.
