Anthony Horowitz has yet again reinvented the classic crime novel, this time writing a fictional version of himself as the Watson to a modern-day Holmes. One bright spring morning in London, Diana Cowper -- the wealthy mother of a famous actor -- enters a funeral parlor. She is there to plan her own service. Six hours later she is found dead, strangled with a curtain cord in her own home. Enter disgraced police detective Daniel Hawthorne, a brilliant, eccentric investigator who's as quick with an insult as he is to crack a case. Hawthorne needs a ghost writer to document his life; a Watson to his Holmes. He chooses Anthony Horowitz. Drawn in against his will, Horowitz soon finds himself a the center of a story he cannot control. Hawthorne is brusque, temperamental and annoying but even so his latest case with its many twists and turns proves irresistible. The writer and the detective form an unusual partnership. At the same time, it soon becomes clear that Hawthorne is hiding some dark secrets of his own. A masterful and tricky mystery that springs many surprises.… (más)

It was okay.i found the presence of the author in the story very distracting. The constant name dropping and the classism were hard to stomach. ( )

Good but not great mystery told from the POV of the author tasked with writing the “true crime” book about the case.

The story was interesting but the whole thing had a weird vibe — almost stilted note taking and not flowing storytelling. I think that was a deliberate choice and I’m not sure it was a good one. I liked the Magpie Murders more. ( )

The story is full of surprises, twists and suspense. Horowitz writes a mystery as he partners with an intense and irritating former policeman, Hawthorne. Hawthorne wants Horowitz to write his story but he seldom opens up about himself nor the clues and the investigation steps. He has amazing powers of observation and deduction but he is not a people person.

The ending was breathtaking as the killer is revealed and Horowitz comes too close to the solution. Definitely I didn’t figure out the identity of the killer.

Note: There are like 7 occurrences of the * f bomb. Usually used when Hawthorne is very angry. ( )

I enjoyed this book in the way it was written, the writer being a character and the narrator. The story line had some good twists. I look forward to the next installment. ( )

Just after eleven o'clock on a bright spring morning, the sort of day when the sunshine is almost white and promises a warmth that it doesn't quite deliver, Diana Cowper crossed the Fulham Road and went into a funeral parlour.
