On Jan 10 I stayed up till 11:05 PM and wrote: "Yesterday I was fed up with the book, but oh now it's gotten so good. They've gotten to Germany or rather Czechoslovakia and it's now horrifyingly terrible. Never were the right impressions so clearly brought out. All that first part was just to clarify this part about their hell in Naziland." On Jan 12 I said: "Read tonight in book. Super-good." On Jan 14 I said: "It's midnight. I stayed up and finished Beneath Another Sun. It wasn't as good towards the end as it was about the middle, but it was better than at the beginning. Another story of bestial, inhuman Nazi tyranny."
