This volume is designed to provide a concise overview of West German economic reconstruction in the post-war years. The author argues that far from being shattered in 1945, the German economy was in a fundamentally healthy position and had increased its industrial capacity enormously with a large pool of highly skilled labour, supplemented by a continuing influx of Eastern European refugees. He argues further that Germany was assisted, wittingly or unwittingly, by the policies of the British and American military governments. All these things taken into consideration, the author suggests that West Germany contained the preconditions for economic growth which enabled it to reach its present position of economic strength.
