Symmetry, Shape, and Space uses the visual nature ofgeometry to involve students in discovering mathematics.  Thetext allows students to study and analyze patterns for themselves,which in turn teaches creativity, as well as analytical andvisualization skills.  Varied content, activities, andexamples lead students into an investigative process and providethe experience of doing and discovering mathematics asmathematicians do. Exercises requiring students to express theirideas in writing and to create drawings or physical models makemath a hands-on experience.  Assuming no mathematics beyondthe high school level, Symmetry, Shape, and Space is theperfect introduction to mathematics in the liberal arts course ofstudy, and it is designed so that each chapter is independent ofthe others, allowing great flexibility.
