The way the Emerald Archer lives his life will change forever, as Green Arrow is betrayed by those closest to him! A budding relationship with Black Canary forces Ollie to confront the fact that you can't fight "the man" if you are "the man." And one by one, all of his friends leave him, and all the money in the world won't bring them back when he needs them most. The events of "The Death and Life of Oliver Queen" will rattle Oliver's status quo so much, his choices as a superhero will never be the same again. An above average reboot story, if you already have some idea of who all the players are. Sure, there are cliches here. The bad guys are pretty bad and they also know they're bad. It's a comic book. The art is well done and I like the Seattle setting for GA. ( )

There's some nice character beats here that reminded me of Tynion's work on Detective Comics a bit, but there's still a lot that gives me pause. The art is kind of all over the place (check out the one auctioneer guy who's like a human stick bug - I'm still unsure if that was intentional), and the tone is too (sometimes it wants to be very socially serious - which is fine! - but other times it wants to be very James Bond, which is a tough merger they don't quite pull off). And also, Does everything have to go back to the friggin island? I think this is one place I could do without the influence of the show.

Overall, I have quibbles, but it's still alright in my book. ( )

I received this from Edelweiss and DC Comics in exchange for an honest review.

This was actually quite a fun book. I've always viewed Oliver Queen/Green Arrow as a Bruce Wayne/Batman knockoff, you know, the rich playboy socialite by day, mercenary by night.

This story kind of knocks that concept on its head, and Benjamin Percy actually turns in a pretty good story. The artwork is pretty good, too.

I'll keep reading this one, I think. ( )

I’ve never read Green Arrow before, and I don’t watch the CW show. I love The Flash, but found Arrow too gloomy (and too close to a Batman clone). When I saw this Green Arrow Rebirth, I decided to take a shot because I’ve liked the character in the animated films.

The storyline is pretty dark, with homeless people disappearing in Seattle, but GA is more self-deprecating and earnest. In fact, he’s just like he is in the animated films. Superficially, he’s similar to Batman. Rich, uses lots of gadgets, vigilante. However, he’s not well respected by the rest of the League and this is reflected in his attitude. Since this is rebirth, readers get his backstory retold (albeit at a quicker pace) during his current adventure. This worked great. What didn’t work as much was a lot of internal dialog at the beginning. Large text-filled boxes can interrupt the flow. Nevertheless, I like the chemistry the writer has given GA with Black Canary, and the story was excellent. At one point, GA bluntly tells BC that gadgets and equipment cost money. Being a hero without powers costs money. It was nice to see that faced head on. I also liked the art - it served the writing well.

Overall, I enjoyed this enough to pick up volume two – especially since it ends on a cliffhanger. I’m doing to check out some of the other Rebirth titles, also. Highly recommended to Arrow fans. ( )

I have never read Green Arrow and this introduction was entertaining. This is a collection of the first 5 issues of the Rebirth series and follows Oliver Queen as he is betrayed by those he trusted, almost murdered and sets out with a few trusted allies to take down the Ninth Circle (a group of disfigured individuals following a crazy man named Dante). Benjamin Percy’s story at times may feel clunky but overall it is entertaining and keeps the story flowing. Otto Schmidt and Juan Ferreyra’s artwork works with the story and is stunning and beautifully drawn. I may just have to read Volume 2. ( )
