Douglas uses this book to investigate everything from intelligent gut bacteria to self aware computer generated beings. The action focuses on Admiral Trevor Sandy Gray and his interaction with Konstantin an Artificial Intelligence. It at times looks like buddy film. Yet its not that simple. Gray harbors a deep seated distrust of all the technological wonders of this age. Gray begins to wonder whether the AI's that are integral to this civilization are working for humanity or running it. This questioning of AI's seems to be a theme running through this novel.
I liked this novel but didn't love it. I found myself putting the book down to do other projects. It may be that the series needs a conclusion in my mind. At this point the Douglas is producing interesting situations that his characters must cope with. How long he can do this is an open question. Maybe he is working toward and ultimate confrontation between the Dark Mind and Konstantin or between Earth and the UrSh'daar Masters No matter what direction Douglas choses to go I hope he has a conclusion in mind.
