World War III is over, and nomad soldier Duenan Knute and her cyborg partner Briareos struggle to survive in the abandoned cities and demilitarized zones of the post-war wasteland, the "Badside." Matters appear on the upswing, however, when they are found and brought to Olympus, an urban utopia and centerpiece for the reconstruction of civilization. Duenan and Bri join the Olympus police, a force that seems hardly necessary in such a paradise. But, like in most pretty pictures, perfection is an illusion, and Olympus's peaceful facade hides a dark secret, a violent struggle between human and cyborg that could once again plunge the world into war...and genocide. Deunan and Briareos are nomads in the dystopian landscape of post WW3 Earth. While trying to survive in abandoned city contaminated by serious chemical weaponry their paths will cross with Hitomi, mysterious agent from Olympus, de facto new Earth government and unknown mercenary group.

This continues even as they move to Olympus. Their arrival seems to trigger internal conflict between various city fractions and situation is not made more tolerable when Briareos finds out the city secret, that majority of population are bioroids, artificial humanoid life forms. Soon they will find themselves in crosshairs of police forces, city paramilitary (respectively run by competing city political forces) and strange force aiming to destroy city's command Gaia, force made up of people brought to city from the desolate areas ( aka rest of planet Earth). Action scenes are excellent, both with Deunan and Briareos taking opposition one on one or combat using battle suits called landmates.

Excellent thriller, and as in every aspiring thriller, not everything is explained in the first book. I can see this is something few readers are mzrking as a bad thing. For me, this is serialization as in case of tv show. You cannot expect that everything will be made clear in the episode 1 of planned several episodes. I am looking forward to follow up books.

Highly recommended to fans of SF, cyberpunk and action thrillers. ( )

Waifish Japanese girls battle in robot suits in a post-WW3 utopia. Much exposition between the action scenes. The artwork was sensational, the story... less so. Could hardly tell what was going on at times. Great to look at, hard to recommend. ( )

After World War III, soldier Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos have been living in an abandoned city, making their plans for their future survival in Badside. They've been on their own for some time, so it's a shock to discover that there's someone else in their city, a hulking cybernetic machine who has been taking surveillance photos and monitoring the couple. Together, Deunan and Briareos take down the creature and open the battle armor. The girl inside it, Hitomi, has been sent from Aegis, the Central Management Bureau, to collect them. This is the first Deunan and Bri have heard of the end of the war, and of the new political organizations. Arriving in the new city of Olympus, the travelers find jobs with ESWAT (Extra Special Weapons and Tactics), and start to uncover the secrets of the utopian city.

Post-apocalyptic (WWIII), high school audience (some nudity), but overall not super interested in the rest of the series. Not my thing, i guess. ( )

World War 3 is past. Deunan Knute and cyborg lover Briareos are camped out in a ghost town of the wastelands. Events conspire and bring our heroes to the epic island city being rebuilt in hopes of reinciting peace with humanity. However, humanity is far from perfect and power-hungry officials plot to remove unwanted obstacles! (How vague can you get??) Deunan and Briareos are recruited by S.W.A.T. to disband terrorism, but they find that betrayal lies deep in the echelons of command. Who can you trust in such a place? Nobody! ( )

A cyberpunk classic following the adventures of the soldier Deunan Knute and her cyborg partner Briareos, who are recruited from surviving in a postapocalyptic wasteland to come to the apparently-utopian city Olympus, which is leading the reconstruction of the planet. Olympus has a significant population of artificial humans— clones, hybrids made from multiple genetic sources, and bioroids with significant after-evolution options— and the variations on the theme of humanity set the stage for many interesting possible conflicts. This volume is setting up a larger story, with our heroes clearly being embroiled in a larger scheme.

Some of the combat scenes full of powered armor can be hard to follow, but overall the tale has me wanting to see what happens next. ( )
